The 30th of August 2022, at the Kabira Country Club in Kampala, key stakeholders from the public and private sector were invited to provide input on how to develop a viable electric charging ecosystem in Uganda. This Round Table is part of a feasibility study by NTCS GreenBee in collaboration with Kiira Motors Corporation, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, and the Embassy of The Kingdom of the Netherlands. The overall objective of the study is to investigate and provide insight into the technical and commercial feasibility of the development of a full-fledged EV charging ecosystems in Uganda. During the study use cases and business models that are suitable for the Ugandan context were identified. The objectives of the Round Table were:

- to agree on the strategic objectives of EV charging in Uganda as part of the broader roadmap towards the SDG’s, both from a public and private perspective;

- to discuss and prioritize the possible the broad range of use cases for EV charging in Uganda;

- to agree on the most interesting use cases, relevant to the Ugandan context,  to be further developed;

- to agree on the relevant stakeholders, roles and responsibilities to be involved;

- and to discuss the relevant next steps towards the end of year conference, and pilots to be kicked off in 2022-2023.

The attending Minister of State for Energy, Okaasai S. Opolot, explained that the establishment of EV Charging Infrastructure poses an immense potential to utilise the surplus of hydropower in the country and that it would “enable Uganda to leapfrog toward Electric Mobility and sustainable transport solutions”. Moreover, he states that “a well-planned network of charging stations with sufficient energy capacity is urgently needed for the market to build trust for potential EV-buyers that they can always charge, as well as a scalable market model for EV charging that will attract investors and new businesses”.

During the round table a number of use cases were presented to the key stakeholders in Uganda as candidates for piloting and proof of concept; both generic with focus on the ecosystem as a whole as well as use cases focused on specific EV fleets. Another idea that was developed during the Round Table is the establishment of an Africa Center of Excellence on eMobility. To facilitate local for local and develop capabilities within Africa.
